In the next week or so, billions of red-eyed, black-bodied, orange-legged cicadas will emerge from the ground. The latest generation of cicadas, known as Brood II, have spent 17 years in the dark. They have been down there since Derek Jeter’s rookie season, several feet beneath your feet, sucking on liquids from tree roots, waiting for their moment.

And when they do emerge – one night, likely between May 18 and 24, when the soil reaches the magic temperature of 64 degrees – they will attach to a vertical surface, split open their backs and clamber out of their exoskeleton. They will climb into the tops of trees, start to fly, make an ungodly racket in their search of a mate, lay eggs – and, within weeks, drop dead.

They will be gone before Jeter even gets off the disabled list.

“We should feel lucky and special to witness this – there’s nothing like this anywhere else in the world,” said Andrew Liebhold, a research entomologist with the U.S. Forest Service.

These bugs, known as periodical cicadas, are different from the annual cicadas, which have more of a green body and show up each summer. If you look around the base of trees, you might already be able to spot the holes that periodical cicada nymphs are digging to prepare for their emergence.

The suburbs are generally good habitat for cicadas since they like to lay eggs on young trees and they prefer the edge of forests. How many will emerge “depends on how much development has occurred and how many trees have been cut down since the last emergence,” said George Hamilton, an entomologist at Rutgers University. “They’re stuck in the ground for 17 years, and if they suddenly have no food source, they die.”

For a time, before his Twitter was basically taken over by some pretty terrible joke writers (I would be shocked if his AMA or painting of Bud Selig were actually created by Canseco), Jose Canseco was kind of amusing. In the harmless drunk uncle mold who would tell you “Hey, why not grab the wheel while I piss in this ginger ale bottle.” (Note: None of my uncles ever did that.)

However, it’s important to remember that beyond the steroid use, which does not really matter in the grand scheme of things, Canseco has been charged with aggravated assault, was arrested for hitting his ex-wife, and was charged in an aggravated battery case during a nightclub fight. Yesterday, Canseco added another line to his record when the police interviewed Canseco as a person of interest in a sexual assault case. While Canseco may be innocent, having not been charged yet, his response on Twitter was to out the accuser, posting personal information about her including her name, photo, telephone number, and where she works out. This is meant to humiliate and intimidate the victim in a culture that far too often takes the side of the accused. Stephen Goldman of SBNation has some of the tweets with the information redacted.

It’s time to stop thinking of Canseco as a lovable buffoon, one who says ridiculous things while traveling from independent league to independent league, and recognize that he’s a human being who has done a series of disgusting things. Needless to say, while I may post more to do with this case, there will be no more “Wacky Jose Canseco” posts that will ever show up on this site.

I do not say them with carelessness or arrogance I say them with love and determination. I am determined to see you start living. Start trying. Start believing.

You are alive. You woke up this morning to a brand new day. You have twenty four hours to do something other than wait. You can learn something. You can help someone. You can create anything and everything you keep dreaming about so earnestly. You are alive to live. To tell your story. To fill the days with questions and answers. Love and laughter. Joy and wholeness. Light and warmth. I don’t want to see anymore blank pages in your book of life because you are waiting for the perfect moment, the perfect words, the perfect life. They do not exist. Perfection does not exist on this earth or in any person. Stop waiting for something that you cannot ever find. Start living and discovering all the imperfectly beautiful treasures that this world has to offer.

Start trying.

You are scared. You are shaking and sweating from your fears and your doubts. Okay. Be scared. Sweat and shake from the fears and doubts but don’t let that be all you ever do. Do it afraid. The key has always been there. Some call it courage, some willpower, and others faith. If you need help trust that help is here. Help will come. Help will find you. But you’ve got to start trying. Stop waiting till tomorrow. Stop making lists you just throw in a box and never look at again. Stop with the excuses of all the reasons why it’s impossible. Stop hiding from those dreams and adventures you are passionate about. You literally will never know if you never try.

Start believing.

It won’t matter who else believes in you if you do not believe in yourself. If you do not see your own potential, value, talent, significance.. You need to have faith in yourself in order to try and to live. You need to wake up and believe you have something to offer this world, because you do. You need to believe that you are a valuable, capable, intelligient, and loved human being, because you are. You need to believe that you can learn what you don’t know, because you can. You need to believe that people will offer you a hand and teach you, because they will. You need to believe in the possibility of your life. Of your story that is being written even as you sit there waiting on the sidelines.

Get off that deceptively comfy bench and enter the land of the living. The place that belongs to you as much as it belongs to me or anyone for that matter. This world needs you. People here need you. They need your smile. Your voice. Your hug. Your point of view. Your story. You have the ability to add light into someone’s life. You have the opportunity to add some good and hope into this world. How could you be meaningless? How could you ever not matter?

You go through each day as if you have forever to figure it out. Forever to change what needs to be changed. Forever to make things right. Forever to deal with the wounds.
